Claire Barwell has led our BA (Hons) Film Production courses since 2004 and also leads the MA Documentary Practices and MA Filmmaking courses at UCA Farnham.
Claire studied English at Somerville College Oxford before going on to make films for Channel 4 and working with Terence Davies and Patrick Keiller, amongst other independent filmmakers. She worked at the BBC, ITV, the London Filmmakers’ Co-op and the IFVA before winning a Winston Churchill scholarship to research women’s filmmaking in France and Canada.
Claire took an MA in Independent Film and Video at the London College of Communication and then went on to gain an MA in Cultural Memory at the Institute of Romance Studies, University of London, publishing her thesis ‘Frozen Memories: Unthawing Scott of the Antarctic in Cultural Memory’ in the Journal of Visual Memory.
She served as Chair of Nahemi from 2010 to 2016 and is an External Examiner for Anglia Ruskin and the National Film and Television School. Claire recently served on the jury for Watersprite and Aesthetica film festivals and gave a masterclass on Women in Film at Cortex Film festival in Portugal.
