Claire Barwell has led our BA (Hons) Film Production courses since 2004 and also leads the MA Documentary Practices and MA Filmmaking courses at UCA Farnham.

Claire studied English at Somerville College Oxford before going on to make films for Channel 4 and working with Terence Davies and Patrick Keiller, amongst other independent filmmakers. She worked at the BBC, ITV, the London Filmmakers’ Co-op and the IFVA before winning a Winston Churchill scholarship to research women’s filmmaking in France and Canada.

Claire took an MA in Independent Film and Video at the London College of Communication and then went on to gain an MA in Cultural Memory at the Institute of Romance Studies, University of London, publishing her thesis ‘Frozen Memories: Unthawing Scott of the Antarctic in Cultural Memory’ in the Journal of Visual Memory.

She served as Chair of Nahemi from 2010 to 2016 and is an External Examiner for Anglia Ruskin and the National Film and Television School. Claire recently served on the jury for Watersprite and Aesthetica film festivals and gave a masterclass on Women in Film at Cortex Film festival in Portugal.

Chair of the National Association of Higher Education in the Moving Image (2010 to 2016), where she instigated the annual conference for teachers of film ‘Talking Shop’ and oversaw the annual Eat our Shorts festival of student films and the Nahemi/Kodak student film competition.

2010 Breath/Breathe (2010) Sound and glass installation for the Creative Campus Initiative, exhibited as part of ‘Olympia’  James Hockey Gallery Farnham, Herbert Read Gallery Canterbury.

Grand Union (2009, DVD, I minute) commissioned by Joost Hunnigher and the City One Minutes for the World Expo City Culture 2009 Pavilion in Shanghai 2010. Screening of Grand Union, 11th December 2009, Candid Arts Underground Gallery, London. Also screened as part of Facing Extinction: Gustav Metzger exhibition at the James Hockey Gallery, Farnham 2014.

1984 Photographic Exhibits (1984, 16mm, col. 20 mins) wrote, produced and directed. Funded by GLA, sold to Channel 4 With Imelda Staunton, Kay Adshead, Jonathan Coy and Bob Goody, music by Michael Nyman Screened at the London Film Festival, Cracow, Uppsala, Strasbourg and Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festivals. Distributed by Jane Root for COW films, subsequently Cinenova Screened as part of ‘Reproductive Labour’ at The Showroom Gallery, London in March 2011.
