Raise your hand if you struggle with change… I hate change with a passion. It stresses me out more than you could imagine. It stresses me out when a flight is pushed back 5 minutes. It stresses me out when I have to change trains. It stresses me out when I change my regular order at Starbucks and I know I’m not alone in this hatred. A lot of people share this metathesiophobia – yes there is a dictionary defined word for ‘fear of change’. We like to have things planned out step by step and when things don’t go according to plan it makes us feel like a deer in the headlights.
However, this isn’t to say change is a bad thing. I was on holiday last year and I was caught in the middle of an air traffic strike… consequently my flight home was cancelled. I was offered a flight home 10 days later and bagged an extra 2 weeks in a 5-star hotel. Likewise, we all face major changes in our lives and it’s how we face them that determines whether they are positive or negative experiences. You can’t change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust the sails to reach your destination.
Embrace change and consider it a chance to grow. Learning to adapt and be flexible is a major skill in both life and employment. It will prove invaluable in your years to come and the growth offered from an unexpected shift in direction is immeasurable. It’s like a 2-4-1 deal.
Maybe life throws you a curve-ball and you don’t get the grades you were expecting, or your plans have changed and you want to go down another route. So what? There are 130 universities in the UK where you can study your passion and have the time of your life. These unexpected changes can lead to the most wonderful experiences. You may find your dream job, meet the love of your life, and have a great time doing so…
So go forth and venture into the unknown! I’ll leave this quote here…
“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.”
