Open days are a great way to get a taste for the university you’re applying to and to get a feel for the vibe around campus. As a student ambassador, I’ve had loads of experience helping prospective students realise how awesome UCA is, but there are loads of things beyond the campus tour that you could be doing to make the most of your open day. Here are just a few of them:
1. Visit the canteen
You’ve just arrived at the university and you’ve got a bit of time to kill before the next tour. So what do you do? No doubt you’ll be hankering for a coffee and something to eat, so head to the canteen! Not only is this great for seeing the kind of food available to students, but you also get to see students and staff relaxing and that’s such a great way to feel the vibe of the uni. Also, they serve croissants at breakfast so it’s really worth a visit.
2. Explore the town
Often when looking at where you want to apply to, it’s easy to forget about where that university sits. It’s so important to make sure that the town or city has what you want in it, or at the very least easy access to the things you find important. How big is their Starbucks? Is there a Poundland? Where are the Pokéstops? Important stuff like that.
3. Take an Accommodation Tour
This may seem a bit unnecessary but the accommodation tour is just as important as the campus tour. Whilst most students won’t stay in halls beyond first year, it’s the foundation of some of your best memories at uni (even if they are a little foggy the next morning). This is also a good opportunity to ask questions about practicalities such as if you have a specific disability and what is available for you. You might be surprised by how much is available for students on campus.
4. Look at the walls
Ok bear with me on this one. Unlike many ‘academic’ universities, UCA is a creative hub and the students here are constantly producing work which is getting put up on the walls. Trying to decide if you’ll like studying here? Look at the work that current students are making. Additionally, if you’re particularly inspired by the work being created, check out more of it on our Instagram. Most of the courses here also have a course specific instagram that you can spend many an hour scrolling through. #wecreate
5. Ask us Anything!
Finally, if you’re at an open day, you’re guaranteed to see an ambassador or two about the place. We’re here to help you! If you have a question about literally anything (uni related) then ask away! If we don’t know the answer, we’ll know an ambassador who does. Remember, we’re not just the friendly faces of UCA, we’re also students here, and as artists, we love nothing more than talking about what we’re doing. We are there to help you, after all.
I hope this list has helped you to make the most of your visit to UCA and who knows… Maybe you’ll see me at your next Open Day!
