Dr Dilek Hocaoglu

Dilek Hocaoglu is Senior Lecturer in Product and 3D Design at UCA Canterbury. She is the stage 2 (Year 2) convenor for the 3D Design undergraduate courses and teaches on MA/MSc Architecture and Design courses as well. Her primary academic interests include culture, identity and branding while she has a particular research interest on social and responsible design subjects.

Bio

Dilek Hocaoglu trained as an industrial product designer and received her PhD degree in 2012 from Istanbul Technical University where she had received her BSc and MSc degrees as well. She studied and conducted research on her PhD thesis focusing on the role of design in city branding strategies based on cultural heritage, during her time at Sheffield Hallam University in 2007.

Prior to her academic career, she worked as a designer in various industries, including glass, furniture, and jewellery. Since then, she had full time teaching and research positions within universities and acted as course leader in design courses.

Throughout her career she has coordinated industry-university collaboration projects, participated in exhibitions, organized impactful workshops, and engaged in research initiatives alongside interdisciplinary colleagues.

She has more than 15 years teaching experience in design courses at various universities. Prior to joining UCA, she served as the course leader for the MA Design and Innovation course and held the position of Senior Lecturer in BA (Hons) Design at Arts University Bournemouth. Before that, she worked as an Associate Professor at a research university in Turkey, where she also served as the Head of the Industrial Design course.

Research statement

Dilek’s primary academic interests include culture, heritage, identity and city branding. Her work focuses specifically on social design and collaboration projects. 

She has contributed to the academic community through publications in journals, conference proceedings and books. These publications cover a wide range of topics, including design education, cultural heritage, material culture and city branding.
