Graduating with a BA (Hons) in Photography from UCA Farnham (then the Surrey Institute of Art and Design), he went on to study on the MA Fine Art programme at The Slade School of Fine Art (University College London).
David is a founding editor of ‘covered in toner’, a small press dedicated to producing and distributing affordable, unlimited editions by photographers, artists and writers. The press is well represented at artists’ book fairs internationally and in galleries and specialist retailers across the UK.
David’s research focuses on artists’ books, self-publishing and pairing photography and text. His practice, almost wholly on the page, examines how stories are shared and how photography and text might extend the minutia of the everyday.
David has been an active member of UCA Farnham’s ‘bookRoom’ research cluster since its inception in 2005. The cluster examines shifts in the production and distribution of artists’ books with regular symposia and group publications. Recent works and exhibitions have explored encounters with places in and around London, building textual palimpsests that regularly make explicit use of the form of the book.
