The film premiere of PICTURE THIS where Professor Anna Fox, an internationally renowned photographer and university lecturer, introduces us to three groups of women from refugee and migrant communities and a women’s refuge as they learn to use photography to reinterpret their experiences and create moving photographic images.

PICTURE THIS is a heartwarming portrait of three groups of women – in Edinburgh, Farnham and London. The women are from refugee and migrant communities and a women’s refuge, they have all had to leave their own countries or homes because of war, sexuality or to escape abusive relationships.

Anna Fox says: “PICTURE THIS documents the second iteration of Putting Ourselves in the Picture, a project of national interest working with marginalised women learning about photography and representation. In part 2 of this project our participants, three groups of women in Scotland, London and Farnham entered into a period of training and mentorship and started to engage with the photography industry discovering the opportunities that it might offer. Each group created their own powerful, storytelling artworks which you can see in the book Putting Ourselves in the Picture 2 published by Here Press. The PICTURE THIS documentary is about the journey of the participants and the project and includes some of the supportive and inspiring players in the photography industry like Genesis Imaging, London and Stills Gallery, Edinburgh. Our partners have enabled this project to happen and the mentors employed to work with the participants have inspired the brilliance that has emerged from it – we can’t wait to raise more money to take this project to another level.”

PICTURE THIS, is an output of Putting Ourselves in The Picture – Part 2 Engaging with Industry which was led in partnership with five organisations: Women for Refugee Women and Autograph in London, Creative Response in Farnham, National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh and Work Show Grow online.

It was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council , University for the Creative Arts and all our partners.
