Artificial Intelligence & Creative Practice at UCA

The role artificial intelligence plays in the creative process one of the most talked-about and transformative developments of the 21st century. Whether it’s inspiring the creative process, helping with mundane tasks or creating new ways of experiencing art, AI is reshaping the creative industries.

This postgraduate degree in AI Creative Practice invites you to explore AI not just as a tool, but as a partner in creative innovation.

Taught at UCA’s Farnham School for Creative & Cultural Industries, this degree in artificial intelligence addresses the growing demand for professionals who can harness the power of AI to enhance and innovate within the creative industries.

This degree is ideal for artists and computer scientists alike, who want to explore how AI can enhance their practice. It blends AI and creative practices encourages you to bridge the gap between technicality and creativity. This will especially benefit industries where collaboration between creative professionals and technical experts is essential.

Real-world application of your learning is central to the degree. You’ll learn how to present your work to industries, collaborate with other creatives, participate in design and prototyping exercises and bring all your experience together at the end to develop an ambitious final project that showcases yourself as an AI specialist within the creative industries.

Whether your future lies in the arts, creative technology, or emerging industries still to come, by the time you graduate, you’ll have the insights, technical expertise and creative confidence to position yourself at the forefront of this evolving landscape.

What you'll study

What you'll study

The content of the course may be subject to change. Curriculum content is provided as a guide.

Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence and Creative Practice
This unit will build on your understanding of programming concepts. By the end of the unit, you’ll create a web-based application that critically reflects on interface cultures and contemporary AI debates.

The unit provides you with an opportunity to explore industry-standard tools for utilising AI models, and combine these with established design principles. This will be guided by weekly labs, pre-recorded materials, and self-directed study.

Research Methods for Creative Technologies
In this unit students will learn to blend theoretical research methods and industry practices to analyse and assess applications and interactive experiences. This unit will enable you to apply what you learn to your own practice through a reflective report.

Advanced AI for Creative Practice
This unit will build on your existing programming knowledge. Using machine learning frameworks you'll learn to create and work with AI models, with the aim of creating innovative and cutting-edge creative applications.

Using machine learning frameworks students will learn the core principles of working with AI and apply these to create research prototypes.

AI and Creative Practice Lab
This studio-based unit will enable you to experiment with alternative design methodologies. You'll explore theories related to participatory design and then choose between working on one of three potential projects with an external partner. This unit focuses on collaboration, prototyping, and presenting ideas to external stakeholders in an applied context.

The Final Major Project is a culmination of your skills, passions and creativity as developed throughout your postgraduate degree. Your project should be ambitious but achievable, and framed by how you want to promote yourself as an AI and Creative Practice Specialist.

You can choose to either expand on work undertaken in previous units or develop an entirely new proposal. You’ll produce a creative, challenging, detailed and logical proposal for a body of work that you will then complete during your final semester.
