What do our fashion business students say?

One of our Fashion Business & Management students, Sian, recently shared their experience studying at UCA:

Fashion is about inspiration, creativity, and confidence. It’s subjective, what you love won’t be what everyone loves – but that’s the beauty.

When Sian joined the course, she knew the kind of fashion she loved, but she didn’t know if that would be enough:

“All you need at UCA is passion, you don’t need a background in fashion. We didn’t know anything when we arrived. The course is so good at helping you explore every avenue so that, by the end, you know exactly what you want to do.

“We had really, really lovely lecturers. They took the time to work with every single person, teaching us how to use InDesign and bring our visions to life. They inspired an interest in sustainability in all of us. They talked about their personal experiences, which made them personal for us.”

Exposure to different viewpoints, and having the space and time to explore them yourself, is what made this course so appealing to Sian. Surrounded by creatives, both in fashion and on other courses, makes all the difference in your practice.

And when it comes to turning that practice into a career, Sian is constantly drawing on her experience now that she’s working in the industry:

“The importance of aesthetic presentation was drilled into us, and for really good reasons. Now that I’m working at a label in London, those presentation skills come into my job every single day. It makes such a difference.

“You can come out of this course and go into any area of fashion business. Trend forecasting, visual merchandising, you get a flavour of everything and one of them will become your thing.”

Looking back on her time at UCA, it was the opportunities outside of the classroom that were just as valuable as the lessons learned in lectures:

“We’d spend our weekends in London, trendspotting, in and out of Harrods, Selfridges, Liberty’s.

“Then in second year, I studied in New York. Classes on 5th Avenue, iconic luxury shopping. It was magical.

“I never expected my life to involve going to Manhattan, or becoming an expert in fashion sustainability. My friends don’t recognise me now, I was never that girl. Now I am.”
