MA graduate joins New Architecture Writers

Ninu Sonuga, a recent MA Interior Design graduate from the UCA, designer, and visual artist, has been announced as part of the eighth cohort of New Architecture Writers (N.A.W.).

08 April 2026

N.A.W. began in 2017 and has since become a platform for new writing about architecture and cities by emerging critics of colour.

Ninu will focus on regenerative design practices, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, exploring how design practice can be rooted in local systems, materials and social structures.

He applied to the 10-month programme, which is run by the Architecture Foundation and the Architectural Review, by submitting a short piece of writing titled ‘Sovereign Rot’. It was about state-owned buildings in Legos, Nigeria, which have been left abandoned for decades.

He added: “I was interested in what this pattern of abandonment reveals about governance, disposability, and who cities are built for.”

The cohort will now meet fortnightly to work on several briefs throughout the course and attend various workshops.

“It’s designed to be an intensive, collaborative programme with mentoring by experienced design critics and editors," explained Ninu.

Through the programme, Ninu is keen to develop his writing skills. “But, because writing can be quite solitary, I’m also really looking forward to being in conversation about and workshopping ideas through mentorship and peer feedback.”
