UCA collaborates with indie filmakers for brand new limited series

University for the Creative Arts (UCA) successfully collaborated on a proof-of-concept project, laying the groundwork for a dystopian, limited series called Faults, which will screen in London this November.

22 October 2025

Shot in UCA’s Virtual Production (VP) studio, using the University’s industry-standard, immersive technology, it is a great example of what indie filmmakers can do.

Ben Ogunbiyi, writer and director of the dystopian adventure thriller, said: “I think the most exciting thing about working with VP is to set a new precedent.”

Students were involved throughout the project, taking on professional roles such as costume designer, technical runner, and script supervisor. They worked closely with industry professionals, contributing to various stages of the production and gaining practical experience in a real-world setting.

Iris Farago, a BA (Hon) Design for Theatre & Screen student, who worked on set as a costume designer, said: “It has provided a lot of experience. Doing things outside of the course is important: being on set in a professional manner.”

UCA VP Technician Jack Newton added: “This project has so much value from so many different sides. Once you can bring in any environment into your VP studio, then your universe is quite literally your oyster!”

This collaboration was funded by the Games and Innovation Nexus (GAIN) a £2.3mil Research England Connecting Capabilities Fund programme, aimed at bridging the knowledge and skills gap between industry and academia and expanding the use of games engine technologies.

The programme funded use of the VP studio at UCA as well as research and development activity exploring how to make emerging technology more accessible to independent companies who may otherwise be priced out of these storytelling techniques.

The resulting proof-of-concept film brilliantly showcases how academia and industry can collaborate, and demonstrates the University’s ability to use its groundbreaking tools to produce high-quality storytelling that has a transformative impact.
