Katerina-Athina  Kassi

Katerina-Athina Kassi (she/her) is a UCA Lecturer in Design for Theatre and Screen with a background in set design for screen and a practice that spans film, stop-motion animation, games, and immersive technologies.

Bio

As a production designer, Katerina-Athina has worked across live-action film, animation, and video game projects, with a particular interest in digital design, immersive storytelling, and speculative environments. Her work blends traditional set design practices with digital tools, including SketchUp, V-Ray, Blender, Photoshop, AutoCAD, and VR applications, exploring the potential of virtual production, 3D scanning, and 3D printing in contemporary design workflows. She has participated in immersive technology workshops and exhibitions at Tate Britain and Tate Exchange.

She has taught at the University of the Arts London and continues to work freelance as a Lecturer in Production Arts at the Screen and Film School, BIMM University Brighton. Her teaching practice focuses on digital and physical art direction, technical drawing, model-making, and supporting students in developing a strong understanding of spatial and narrative design. She is committed to helping emerging designers gain confidence in both the creative and technical aspects of production design.

An alumna of the University of the Arts London, Katerina-Athina holds a BA (Hons) in Theatre and Screen: Set Design for Screen and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her academic work emphasises collaborative learning, cross-disciplinary approaches, and real-world applications that reflect the fast-evolving nature of the screen industries.

Research statement

Practice-led research exploring how immersive and digital technologies — including VR, 3D scanning, and game engines — can expand traditional set design methodologies for screen. Areas of interest include speculative design, worldbuilding, and interdisciplinary collaboration across animation, games, and live-action media.
