Lecturer in Music and Sound Production

Akira Brown (they/them) lectures on the BA (Hons) Music and Sound Production and BMus (Hons) Composition for Screen courses and is an award-winning sound artist and music producer. Their Practice as Research focuses on live performance with modular synthesizers, software coding, and the history of electronic music.
Bio
Akira’s work has been released internationally on independent record labels based in the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands, with distribution through HMV, Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Bleep, Boomkat, and Tobira Records in Japan. They have received commissions to produce works for ISSUE Project Room in New York, Hallow Ground in Switzerland, and have appeared on several electronic music compilations. Their work has been featured in a variety of magazines and online blogs, most notably The Wire magazine, alongside features on NTS Radio and Reboot FM (Berlin). Their interdisciplinary work includes collaborations with textiles artists informed by research into Alzheimer’s with support from the University of Southampton and music licensed for use in the field of contemporary dance.
Akira completed their MSc research on the Musical Applications of the Enigma Cipher with the University of Edinburgh in 2022, a project involving the simulation of an Enigma machine using the Pure Data programming language. Their research contributions include examination of no-input mixing techniques, co-authored with Tom Mudd for the 2023 international conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), and contributions on ambient music practice for the Contemporary Ambient Research Symposium in 2024.

- Devised and taught a tailored digital animation course for Aardman Animations' newly formed mobile division.
- Featured in Edge magazine in December 2010,
- He has also worked as a media designer, creating concepts, designs, models and animation for online portals such as Thunderbirds (the movie), The Chronicles of Riddick, Creature Comforts, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
