If you are an international student, aged 16 or older, and you want to improve your creative subject knowledge and English for academic skills before your degree, then the UCA International College (UCAIC) is the ideal start to your study in the UK. UCAIC provides pre-degree courses which will guarantee you a place on one of our undergraduate, postgraduate or research degree courses. And UCAIC has a dedicated English Language department that provides English Language support throughout your time with us.

Our Foundation Year courses provides an opportunity for students to:

  • develop core skills, including research, academic English study and writing
  • access our full range of creative workshops and resources
  • improve their academic study skills and English communication and language skills
  • acquire insight into contemporary creative practices and the ability to think critically
  • gain experience of an academic environment and the ability to work independently
  • attend research trips and integrate into UK university life before the degree year begins

Our specialist team will support you throughout, from your application to your move to the UK. You’ll collaborate with students on other creative courses, build a network of industry contacts and gain invaluable work experience, preparing you for a career in the creative industries.

Key Facts:

Specialist preparation
A student-to-staff ratio of 18:1 means a high level of tutor interaction so you can develop at your own pace. You will learn and practice specific art and design vocabulary in preparation for your undergraduate course. The course is highly practical, and you will be in the studio every day, with further tasks developing your English skills and your presentation, essay writing and referencing skills.

Academic English language and study skills
Support for the development of academic English skills is available throughout the course. You will develop your English language and academic study skills through an integrated programme of critical studies which will prepare you to a degree level of study.

Teaching methods and tutor engagement
Teaching methods include studio work, one-to-one tutorials, lectures, seminars and practical workshops. We will introduce you to a wide range of approaches in the use of materials, methods and processes. Assessment methods will range from presentations and critiques to portfolio reviews.

Academic and student support
There are opportunities for you to informally discuss any points raised in lectures or seminars through personal tutorials. You will also receive individual support and professional advice on personal and academic issues, including your next steps in your choice of studies or career. We will offer advice and guidance on visa applications and other pastoral matters.
