Bio
Dr. Nace Pušnik (SFHEA, FRSA) is an educator, researcher, and design practitioner from Slovenia with a multidisciplinary background spanning analog and digital media, creative foundations, graphic design, typography, visual communication design, usability, and user experience (UX). His work brings together creative practice, academic research, and design education, with a particular interest in the relationship between design, technology, and human behaviour.
At UCA, his teaching and research explore how visual and interactive design influences the ways people perceive, understand, navigate, and engage with information. Rather than approaching design primarily as a matter of visual appearance, he considers how design decisions can support communication, usability, accessibility, and meaningful interaction across different contexts and platforms.
A central focus of his work is the role of typography, colour, composition, hierarchy, and other graphic elements in shaping user experience. He is particularly interested in how aesthetic decisions affect functionality and how established principles of visual communication can be applied and adapted within contemporary digital environments. His approach seeks to balance visual quality with purpose, ensuring that design decisions respond effectively to both communication objectives and user needs.
Since 2009, he has combined academic work with professional practice and international teaching. The relationship between these areas is central to his approach: professional practice informs his academic interests, research provides a framework for questioning and developing design methods, and teaching creates opportunities to explore ideas through experimentation, discussion, and practical application.
In the classroom, he emphasises critical thinking, creativity, experimentation, and adaptability. He encourages students to look beyond immediate visual solutions and consider the reasoning behind their decisions: who they are designing for, what they need to communicate, how people might interact with their work, and how effectively the outcome responds to its context. Design is therefore approached as both a creative and analytical discipline, shaped by research, iteration, reflection, and informed decision-making.
As technologies, tools, and modes of interaction continue to change, he places particular importance on developing transferable skills rather than focusing solely on specific software or short-lived trends. Students are encouraged to establish a strong understanding of fundamental design principles while remaining open to new technologies, methods, and forms of practice. This combination provides a foundation for responding thoughtfully and creatively to an evolving professional landscape.
His multidisciplinary background also enables him to connect areas of design that are sometimes considered separately. Typography, for example, can function as visual form, a communication system, an element of information hierarchy, and part of an interactive experience. In the same way, colour, composition, and graphic structure can be considered not only in aesthetic terms but also in relation to communication, navigation, engagement, and usability.
He earned his PhD in Graphic & Interactive Communications, Design, and Technology in 2016. His academic background has reinforced his interest in connecting theoretical investigation with practical design activity and in translating research insights into meaningful applied outcomes.
Across his research, teaching, and professional practice, he continues to explore the evolving role of designers within technology-driven environments. His work considers how visual communication can remain clear, engaging, and visually compelling while responding to changing technologies, patterns of interaction, and human needs. At the core of his approach is the belief that effective design connects creative exploration with practical purpose, bringing together visual sensitivity, critical thinking, technological awareness, and an understanding of the people who use and experience design.
Research statement
My research is grounded in the relationship between design, education, and professional practice. I am particularly interested in how research can inform graphic and visual communication design, providing an evidence-based foundation for creative and strategic decision-making.
I believe research is most valuable when theoretical knowledge can be translated into meaningful practical applications. Connecting academic enquiry with professional practice helps bridge the gap between education and industry, while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and collaboration.
Integrating research into teaching is an important part of my approach. It encourages students to look beyond aesthetic choices and develop the ability to question, analyse, test, and justify their design decisions. Engagement with professional practice also helps ensure that teaching remains responsive to developments in design, technology, and industry, enabling students to develop relevant knowledge and skills for their future careers.
Through my research, teaching, and professional practice, I aim to contribute to a design culture in which theory and practice inform one another, and where research supports thoughtful, purposeful, and user-centred design outcomes.
