Hal Maughan

Hal leads our Pre-sessional English (PSE) courses, which run from May to December. These are designed to help pre-entry students reach the required language level to transition onto their chosen programme of undergraduate or postgraduate study. He provides support for students from pre-course testing right through to completion and is also responsible for managing PSE tutors.

Bio

With a background in Fine Art studio practice, Hal has been involved in teaching English to international students since 2001. He has been working in HE Art & Design Institutions since 2013, initially in Cambridge and now here in Farnham.

Hal has a wealth of experience in course creation, materials development, and assessment writing, both within EAP and the broader ELT world. He is passionate about giving students authentic materials and tasks that reflect real-world situations and provide a contextual basis for learning.

A keen and ongoing interest in Art & Design means Hal is a frequent visitor to new exhibitions, especially painting and photography, and he also writes the occasional essay for shows and catalogues. In the music world, he enjoys going to see up-and-coming new bands, plays a variety of instruments, and writes and records his own compositions.
