The Department of Quality Assurance and Enhancement manages the regulations for external examining, including the nomination, appointment, induction and reporting processes. The Department maintains a register of all external examiners, coordinates the annual reports from external examiners and pays their fees and expenses upon the fulfillment of their contract.
Each external examiner submits an annual report which informs the University whether academic quality and standards are comparable with courses across the sector. The examiners' responses are important for use during course reviews and for Annual Academic Monitoring. External examiner arrangements are set out in the Quality Assurance Handbook.
NEW EXTERNAL EXAMINER INDUCTION: The Department of Quality Assurance and Enhancement will contact new examiners to the University following their appointment to arrange induction.
The University reporting template has been devised is available to download. Examiners should use this template to submit their reports.
Following a visit or when submitting an annual report, external examiners should complete a Fee Claim Form and an Expenses Claim Form. Please note that we require these forms to be returned as a signed hard copy, and we will need all receipts to process any expenses claims. Details of financial arrangements can be found in external examiners' Contract Letter, which is sent upon the commencement of a period of office as an external examiner.
