Research Project Title
The Talismanic Thread: Textiles, Magic and Contemporary Art.

Research Project Summary
Jo Lovelock’s research examines the relationship between transitional and talismanic objects through textile art practice and the context of magical thinking. Investigating the role of cloth in operative magic and focusing on contemporary British witchcraft since the repeal of the Witchcraft Act in 1951 Jo is exploring textiles’ ability to create a holding or containing environment for our emotional states.

Personal Profile
Jo has a BA(Hons) in Textile Design and an MA in Textiles with distinction from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.

She spent two years as Artist in Residence in the Textile Department at UCA between 2010 and 2012 and had a joint exhibition with Naoya Doi at GalleryGallery in Kyoto, Japan in 2017.
