Richard Appleby leads our BA (Hons) Product Design courses at UCA Farnham and Rochester. He has established a significant profile as an industrial designer whose creative skills founded the 'Atlantic Design' product design studios, designing products for manufacture in many parts of the world.
With a first class degree in Industrial Design from Northumbria University, Richard went on to complete his Masters course at the Royal College of Art, where his final work was chosen for the Victoria and Albert Museum's 'Boilerhouse' Exhibition in 1982. He also exhibited at the Künstlerhaus, Vienna within the Best of Young British Design Exhibition 1984.
Later as Design Manager for Bell Northern Research, Richard received his Fellowship of the Chartered Society of Designers in 1992, and was later invited to Eindhoven as a founding design member of the new TU/e Faculty for Industrial Design. As TU/e Design Director for the MA programme, he considered many future product concepts for Philips and Vodafone and contributed to many research activities within the TU/e Design Quality Interaction Research Group.
