The International Foundation in Business course, based at UCA Epsom, focuses on exploring innovation and problem solving in the context of creative business. Covering key business, management and marketing skills, you’ll emerge from the course with the confidence and understanding to take your education to the next level.

You’ll engage in a series of independent and group projects, working on live briefs and developing essential business and communication skills. With a very practical approach, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment with photography, visual communication, design-thinking and fashion. After exploring the range of pathways within creative business, we will support you in choosing which area you’d like to specialise in at undergraduate level.

With frequent visits to cities such as London and Oxford, as well as trips to the south coast of England and to Amsterdam, you will experience a range of creative businesses first-hand, discovering what makes the UK such an important place to study creative business and why our country has a world-renowned reputation in the creative industries.

In addition, you'll study a 10 week intensive English course at UCA Farnham; this part of the course will improve your IELTS by 1.0.

As part of our Diploma 2 Degree scheme, successful completion of all units means that you are guaranteed progression to study one of our undergraduate courses within our Business School for the Creative Industries.

  • 10 week intensive English

    Our intensive English language course is specifically designed to prepare you to study art and design at UCA. The 10 week course will improve your IELTS by 1.0.

  • Stage 1

    Introduction to Creative Business and Management
    Throughout this unit you will learn about different styles, approaches and tools used in creative business and management historically and how these are developing in the present day. This information will be taught through practical workshops, lecture and seminar series, talks from industry professionals and first hand study visits to relevant UK businesses. Combining practical, entrepreneurial and contextual skills, you will use a combination of hands on field work and desk based methods. This unit will have a creative output of designing and pitching your own idea for a hypothetical business working in a small team.

    English for Academic Purposes, Research and Study Skills
    This unit focuses on developing core English language, research and study skills whatever level you are currently at. The importance of study skills and command of language in listening, speaking, reading and writing are all essential to studying in a new environment and education system. We have designed this unit to run throughout the entire course to support your incremental development. This enables you to develop each of these skills at your own pace as you progress through the course.

  • Stage 2

    Marketing, Communication and Branding
    This unit will enable you to develop foundational knowledge in a range of Marketing and Branding skills specially for creative communication. The unit will also develop your creative idea generation. You will develop this range of skills by looking at examples of different marketing and branding practices, styles and tools and through hands on workshops that will explore digital tools, platforms and technology. Effective marketing and communication of a brand and business are essential skills to running or managing a successful business with a strong identity, that adds value and ensures longevity.

    This unit focuses on developing core English language, research and study skills whatever level you are currently at. The importance of study skills and command of language in listening, speaking, reading and writing are all essential to studying in a new environment and education system.   • Stage 3

    Creative Business Project
    This unit involves researching, developing and presenting a self-directed creative business project. It is an opportunity to make informed choices in your subject focus, research, practical ideas development and final presentation. This unit will support you in confirming your interests within creative business, develop your digital fluency, design skills and engagement with creative technology. It is also designed to help you begin to develop a professional practice through applying self-directed independent learning skills. You will have the chance to finally confirm your area of interest and specialism within creative business for progression onto your BA course.

    These fees are correct for the stated academic year only. Costs may increase each year during a student’s period of continued registration on course in line with inflation (subject to any maximum regulated tuition fee limit). Any adjustment for continuing students will be at or below the RPI-X forecast rate.

     
  • Fee discounts and scholarships

    All full cost (non-EU) students who successfully complete the International Foundation and progress to a UCA undergraduate course will receive a 10% discount on the standard listed tuition fee for the first academic year of their undergraduate course. If the tuition fees are paid in full before enrolment, an additional 4% discount is applied.

Facilities

Business facilities include: dedicated studios and study areas, digital media suites equipped with Macs and PCs, programmed with specialist software such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver and After Effects and a modern library with a wealth of books, journals, special collections and online resources.

If you choose to pay your fees in full before you enrol for your course, you will pay the discounted fee. If you choose to pay after you enrol, or pay in instalments, you will pay the standard fee.

Discounts for progressing students

All full cost (non-EU) students who successfully complete the International Foundation and progress to a UCA undergraduate course will receive a 10% discount on the standard listed tuition fee for the first academic year of their undergraduate course. If the tuition fees are paid in full before enrolment, an additional 4% discount is applied

  • Specialist preparation

    A student-to-staff ratio of 15:1 means a high level of tutor interaction, so you can develop at your own pace. You will learn and practice specific art, design and business vocabulary in preparation for your undergraduate course. The course is highly practical, engaging you in key skills through group and individual projects. Alongside these core skills you will be given tasks developing not only your English skills but also your presentation, communication, essay writing and referencing skills.

  • English language & study skills

    Support for the development of academic English skills is available throughout the course. You will develop your English language and academic study skills through an integrated programme which will prepare you for undergraduate level study. We also offer Insessional English as additional support through our LSS.

  • Teaching methods & tutor engagement

    Teaching methods include studio work, one-to-one tutorials, lectures, seminars and workshops. We will introduce you to a wide range of approaches in business, communication, marketing and creative practices. Assessment methods will range from presentations and critiques to project reviews.

  • Academic support

    There are opportunities for you to informally discuss any points raised in lectures or seminars through personal tutorials. You will also receive individual support and professional advice on personal and academic issues, including your next steps in your choice of studies or career. We will also support you in applying to UCA for your BA (Hons) degree course and will offer advice and guidance on visa applications and other pastoral matters.
