Our International Foundation course is fully integrated with English language teaching, helping you to reach your IELTS target for undergraduate level study. With frequent visits to cities such as London and Oxford, as well as trips to the south coast of England and to Amsterdam, you will discover what makes the UK such an important place to study art and design, and why our country has a world-renowned reputation in the creative industries.

Dedicated to preparing international students for an undergraduate degree in the UK, this course celebrates the culture of each student whilst providing vital insight into Higher Education in the UK. You will emerge from the course with the confidence and practical skills to study a creative subject at a more advanced level.

In addition, you'll study a 5 week intensive English course; this part of the course will improve your IELTS by 0.5. The intensive English course is specifically designed to prepare you to study art and design at UCA.

The practical element of the International Foundation involves experimentation in a range of creative practices, such as fashion, graphics, moving image and crafts.

You will occupy your own studio space where you will be able to refine your abilities in a range of specialist techniques, at the same time as developing your own unique style and approach.

By the end of the course you will have a strong creative portfolio, having explored a number of specialisms before choosing a specific subject to pursue at undergraduate level.

Successfully completing all parts of the course means that you are guaranteed progression to study one of our undergraduate courses.

  • 5 week intensive English

    Our intensive English language course is specifically designed to prepare you to study art and design at UCA. The 5 week course will improve your IELTS by 0.5.

  • Stage 1

    We have built in a range of delivered classes, study skills and support within these units to give you the confidence to thrive in a new academic environment in the UK.

    Exploring Practices, Materials and Process

    Unit 1 has been designed to help you explore and think about specialist areas of study and to develop key skills in investigation, recording and exploration within Art, Design and Media and studying in a second language. You will engage in a series of projects that have been structured to give you a detailed diagnostic introduction to a range of core generic art, design and media concepts and practical working approaches.

    Integrating Research, Ideas and Methods

    A programme of lectures, key workshops and relevant museum and gallery visits in the UK and Europe will support this unit. You will be introduced to and develop your awareness of key contextual, contemporary and historical ideas, concepts and themes, which will continue your practical studio work throughout the course.

    Throughout the course we place a strong emphasis on research, which is the systematic development of ideas and key methodologies for navigating, interpreting and communicating what is driving you and your practice. We have designed this unit to run throughout the 3 stages of the course to support the natural and incremental development of these skills.

  • Stage 2

    Investigating Specialist Practice

    We have designed this unit to build upon the knowledge, skills and practices that you will have developed in Unit 1. This unit gives you the chance to focus on your chosen specialist practice in the creative arts by exploring the practice/s that you have decided upon in greater depth. This will allow you to confirm your area of specialisation for stage 3 of the course.

  • Stage 3

    Confirming Specialist Practice

    You will complete this by initiating, researching, developing, concluding, evaluating and presenting a self-directed specialist project. You will have the chance to propose and undertake individual specialist work and therefore finally confirm your specialist practice and interests. Embedded into this unit is more advanced language and study skills appropriate to academic study within the arts. These skills will be very independent at this point in relation to the key areas that you need to finally advance in.

    Discounts for progressing students

    All full cost (non-EU) students who successfully complete the International Foundation and progress to a UCA undergraduate course will receive a 10% discount on the standard listed tuition fee for the first academic year of their undergraduate course. If the tuition fees are paid in full before enrolment, an additional 4% discount is applied.

Facilities

At UCA Farnham there is a dedicated studio for students on the International Pathway courses. You will also have be able to use the shared facilities at the campus including; 3D workshops with machines for working a in range of materials such as wood, plaster, clay and resin; digital media suites with both Macs and PCs loaded with design software; and open access print studios.

Discounts for progressing students

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

You need to have completed 12 years of schooling (with good grades) and show strong evidence of your ability to successfully complete the programme and progress onto your chosen degree.

English language requirements

For this course you need to take an IELTS for UKVI test and achieve an overall IELTS score of 4.5 with 4.0 in the listening, reading and speaking components and 4.5 in the writing component.

Your portfolio

Your portfolio should include 10-15 pieces of your work, which may include:

  • Painting, drawing (for example still life or life drawing), photography, three-dimensional works
  • Examples of the use of colour (through paintings or illustrations)
  • Sketchbook work which shows some development of your personal ideas.

Please organise files into a presentation or slide show format using PowerPoint or PDF to ensure cross-platform compatibility (PC or Mac).

Key facts about the course

  • Specialist preparation

    A student-to-staff ratio of 15:1 means a high level of tutor interaction, so you can develop at your own pace. You will learn and practice specific art and design vocabulary in preparation for your undergraduate course. The course is highly practical and you will be in the studio every day, with further tasks developing not only your English skills but also your presentation, essay writing and referencing skills.

  • English language & study skills

    Support for the development of academic English skills is available throughout the course. You will develop your English language and academic study skills through an integrated programme of critical studies which will prepare you for undergraduate level study.

  • Teaching methods & tutor engagement

    Teaching methods include studio work, one-to-one tutorials, lectures, seminars and practical workshops. We will introduce you to a wide range of approaches in the use of materials, methods and processes. Assessment methods will range from presentations and critiques to portfolio reviews.

You will also receive individual support and professional advice on personal and academic issues, including your next steps in your choice of studies or career.
