Tom Cardwell is a lecturer, painter and researcher based in London. He teaches at UCA and University of the Arts London. He has previously taught at the University of Huddersfield and the Transart Institute.
Tom’s painting practice is based in an interest in Dutch still life painting of the Golden Age, and uses representational painting strategies to explore the symbolism of contemporary and historic objects.
Tom is currently completing his practice-based PhD research project which uses painting to examine the customised ‘battle jackets’ made by heavy metal fans. Other research interests include an intertextual approach to symbolism in painting, and an interdisciplinary approach to art practice and ethnography.
