An expert in media studies and digital culture, Jan-Noël Thon is a UCA Professorial Fellow.

He’ll be conducting his own research into his specialisms – which include comics studies, film studies, game studies, narrative across media, and playfulness in digital culture – and assisting academic staff and students with exciting research projects.

Jan’s educational background is in Germany, where he gained an MA in German studies, British literature and media culture from the University of Hamburg, as well as a PhD in media and communication studies from the University of Mannheim. He’s held several teaching and research posts across Germany, as well as at the University of Nottingham in the UK and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, Norway.

Jan’s recent book publications include From Comic Strips to Graphic Novels (De Gruyter 2013/²2015), Storyworlds across Media (University of Nebraska Press 2014), Game Studies (Herbert von Halem 2015), Transmedial Narratology and Contemporary Media Culture (University of Nebraska Press 2016/²2018), Subjectivity across Media (Routledge 2017), Ästhetik des Gemachten (De Gruyter 2018), and Comicanalyse (Metzler 2019).
