Professor Jean Wainwright has been interviewing artists, curators, designers and architects for the past twenty-one years, with over a thousand interviews in her audio archive.
From Andy Warhol’s family to Frank Stella and Bill Viola, from Joan Jonas to Sam Taylor Johnson, Isaac Julien and Vanessa Beecroft, the act of interviewing is a specific intervention in the artistic process.

This talk will reflect on what it is that is so compelling about the artist interview. What is it about the artist’s voice that draws Wainwright in? Linking together sound and images the audio interview will be investigated as a strategy, questioning what the artist’s interview reveals. Wainwright will question the value of the audio archive, asking, ‘Can we trust the interview?’

An acoustic argument will be created as voices are played from the archive, echoing across decades and engaging with the fluidity of medium.
Jean Wainwright is Professor of Contemporary Art and Photography and Director of the School of Fine Art and Photography Research Centre.

As a writer and academic she has published extensively in the contemporary arts field, contributing to numerous catalogues and books. She has curated a number of exhibitions both internationally and in the UK. She has appeared on TV and Radio and her archive for Audio Arts was acquired by the Tate Gallery.
