BA (Hons) Graphic Design student Robert Hall, from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) Epsom, has been shortlisted in the adult non-fiction category for the Penguin Random House Student Design Award 2019.
The brief was to design a book cover for Owen Jones’ Establishment (Penguin, 2015). On reading the book, Robert was inspired in his design by the words of renowned British graphic designer Derek Birdsall, “The design is not inflicted on the contents – it is derived from it”.
As for the design Robert said: “To create the image for the cover I used found imagery and my own photographs, which I scanned to capture their printed texture and detail. I then merged these different images together on photoshop to build the final cover image, which was then combined with other cover-design elements such as the hand-typed book title.”
Other book covers that Robert covets the most are Ladislav Sutnar’s Visual Design in Action (Lars Muller, 2015), and Ruben Peter’s The Politics of Design: A (Not So) Global Design Manual for Visual Communication (BIS, 2016).
The winners will be announced on 19 June.
