A UCA graduate has received the People’s Choice Award at this year’s New Designers, in London, for her heart-warming animation.
Rebecca Stapley, who graduated from UCA Rochester with a BA (Hons) Computer Animation Arts last month, was named the winner of the prize for The Jellyfish and Hermit Crab, which has also been selected for the Gold Coast International Film Festival.
“I’m really excited and proud to have won this award,” says Rebecca, 21. “A lot went into the film, which took a whole year to make. It’s so rewarding to see what started out as drawings and sketches transform into a film that has gone on to screen at festivals.”
The Jellyfish and Hermit Crab tells the tale of an outgoing jellyfish and a nocturnal hermit crab who share the same rock pool and are both suffering from loneliness. The jellyfish craves contact but her tentacles sting, while the hermit crab wants to open up but his shell is too thick.
“As day follows night, the jellyfish and hermit crab search the clear rock pool in vain, until one day something happens to surprise them both,” Rebecca adds.
Since graduating, the UCA Rochester alumna has been building on her success as a CGI artist and is currently working as an illustrator for a children’s book.
New Designers takes place at the Business Design Centre, in Islington, in June and July, and showcases the work of 3,000 budding designers in fields including product design, jewellery, illustration and animation motion, and contemporary design crafts.
Computer Animation Arts at UCA focuses on on art and design and allows students to bring characters and worlds to life.
