UCA Photography degree wins ‘Course of the Year’ award

BA (Hons) Photography has been named ‘Affiliated Course of the Year’ at The Association of Photographers (AOP) Student Awards 2016.

The award, which recognises the range of facilities available to our students in addition to the quality of the teaching team and the value of education, was presented to course leader Matt Lindsey at a ceremony held at The Print Space Gallery in London.

Second-year UCA Farnham student Miriam Winsor nominated the course. She said: “The photography degree at Farnham has been transformative for me - I feel as though I have developed not just my photographic skills, but also my ability to operate as an artist - to experiment, to research and to stand by my choices. The way the course team gently challenges and encourages me and other students means that there's always a sense of community among the students and staff, and this then creates a sense of freedom to push boundaries and create work I didn't think possible.

“The teaching at Farnham is geared towards experimentation and developing individual practice. Collaboration with other courses including Fashion, Advertising and Fine Art is facilitated and encouraged. The course has taken me from someone interested in photography to a confident and informed artist.”

With a distinguished history stretching back more than 60 years, the course aims to develop and nurture students’ skills in the studio and the field. During their studies, students have full access to dark rooms, analogue and digital processing suites, studios, computer labs and an extensive range of cameras, lenses and lighting.

Course leader Matt Lindsey said: “We’re delighted to have gained further recognition from such a key institution. It signifies the expertise and dedication of our academic and technical staff, who along with our fantastic students, thrive in a truly collaborative culture. Photography at Farnham has a very rich history; by continually pushing boundaries and developing innovative approaches to such a ubiquitous medium we can continue to excel. This award is recognition of the inspiring community built by our students, staff and alumni.”
