A talented UCA BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery for Fashion, Interiors, Textile Art graduate, which is taught at the Royal School of Needlework at Hampton Court Palace, has been selected for the prestigious Texselect Mentor Scheme after impressing with her story-telling designs.
Livia Papiernik, who was also spotted at New Designers One Year In this year having graduated in 2017, will have the opportunity to further connect with industry through the Texselect scheme. The programme aims to provide opportunities for the most exciting up-and-coming designers in the textiles arena, and to link recent graduates with the commercial world.
“I feel extremely honored and excited to have been selected for the Texselect Mentor Scheme,” says Livia. “It is an extremely generous and important platform for me to showcase my skills and start my career as a young designer. It has definitely given me a boost of confidence to pursue my ambitions. I have already met numerous talented and inspiring people at the London preview show and I look forward to exhibiting at Premier Vision.”
With hopes of working as an embroidery designer and opening her own textile studio where she can create and sell her own work, Livia adds: “Narrative and storytelling is an extremely important part of my work. I love to work with themes that are personal, poetic and also try to question current issues in our society. My graduate collection was inspired by nature, using my childhood memories and my grandmother's poems to create a magical and romantic garden.
“I have always enjoyed delicate and intricate work and I was intrigued by the art of hand embroidery very early on. As an artist who loves narratives, the historical and social impact embroidery has had throughout the centuries spoke to me a lot. I liked the idea of keeping its traditions alive while at the same time challenging it with modern materials and themes in order to make it relevant to today.”
Texselect is a charity organisation managed by industry professionals and has support from many internationally recognised industry names. Designers selected for the unique mentorship programme are introduced to buyers, press and sponsors at the TexSelect London Preview and at Europe’s leading fabric fair, Première Vision Paris.
