Graphic Design students help launch new monthly magazine

First-year students from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) BA Graphic Design course in Epsom have launched a new bi-monthly publication, Once Upon a Town: Epsom & Ewell in collaboration with the design agency Cai and Kyn.

This free magazine will be dedicated to local life with the first issue including an interesting article on the history of the art school in Epsom. Cai and Kyn said of the concept: “After moving our design studio from London to Epsom three years ago we quickly realised from the diverse mix of people that there was loads going on here. However, there didn’t seem to be anything that captured and celebrated the area which is why we decided to create Once Upon A Town.”.

With guidance from their tutors, Sophie Beard and Olivia Mathurin-Essandoh, the students were given several pages of the magazine to design and layout, including the cover.

“It exceeded our expectations and then some. We have to say a massive thank you to Grace Anderson who did a superb job on the cover illustration,” said Cai and Kyn.

Grace–who designed the cover– said that she had: “An amazing experience. I felt very excited to see the first few copies and see how my design looked in print. This opportunity has given me a good experience of working in the design industry and develop the way I work.”

Second-year Graphic Design student Nina Elstad – who has been on a placement at the design agency – also got to work on some of the layouts and illustrations for the magazine and website. Speaking to Nina about her placement with Cai and Kyn she said: “The work environment at my work placement has been quite different, it’s a lot more fast paced. Through my course at UCA I learned a lot about typography, illustration and editorial design, which has been helpful during my placement and also how to stay organised.  I would recommend a placement to other UCA students because it has helped me start my career, teaching me the relevant skills that I can now use for my university projects as well as after graduation.”

Cai and Kyn whose passion for magazines goes right back to when they were studying Graphic Design at University said: “We had no idea what to expect and were feeling quite anxious. However, this completely changed after the students talked us through their initial ideas. We could see that there were the beginnings of some great work. We tried to encourage them to get off the computer/internet and out into the real world with their cameras and sketchbooks. This is where original ideas happen.”

Cai and Kyn know that working on a live-brief is really important in order that students gain industry experience: “Design is an extremely competitive industry. Getting an understanding early is very important. You have to be open to taking onboard guidance and criticism.”

You can pick up a copy of the magazine from the Epsom campus. Alternatively, you can check out the publication online:
