Fashion First: Top industry names head to UCA Epsom to meet up and coming talent

Some of the fashion industry’s biggest employers, including Asos, Kurt Geiger and River Island have travelled to our Epsom campus to meet and greet up and coming talent at our annual Fashion First event.

Showcasing the range of opportunities open to students, including internships, graduate schemes, and career pathways, representatives from leading brands joined members of UCA’s Careers & Employability team as well as a panel of successful UCA alumni.

Frederica Boateng, Founder of Fash:Ed, a support network for fashion students, graduates, freelancers and aspiring entrepreneurs, was on hand to offer helpful tips at the event. She said: “My one piece of advice for students who are looking to get into the industry would possibly be to network. I think networking is so crucial, but I think that’s what you can do to really just help you anywhere because networking can really help you get into any field.”

The panel of UCA alumni, who now work for big brands L’Oreal and Whistles as well as fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, explained to students the importance of gaining as much experience as they can. The panel also said that learning what they didn’t want to do was just as important as learning what they did want to do when forging their careers.

The fifth annual event, which puts students directly in front of potential employers and enables them to network and discuss opportunities and career pathways, also had resources available to help them develop their CVs and create their own business cards.

Aimee Morrison, Talent Recruiter at Asos, spoke about the misconceptions of the fashion industry. She said: “Where fashion is super creative, it’s very business-focused, particularly at Asos. We love people to be so creative and coming up with ideas but we also want them to remember that you really are in a business and that there’s a massive administration side to working in the business as well, and it’s about marrying the two up to be able to come across in the best way possible.”
