Television Production students receive masterclass from BAFTA-winning director

An award-winning director, who has worked on hit shows including the BBC’s Luther and Netflix/Marvel series Daredevil, has spoken of his experiences to our Television Production students.

Farren Blackburn delivered the special directing masterclass to undergraduates at the Maidstone Television Studios, sharing details of his own career progress, from starting out as a student to becoming one of the most sought after directors in the UK and America.

Simon Welsford, course leader of Television Production at UCA, said: “Farren outlined his directing approach from preparation all the way through to the edit. He spoke at length about directing major talent such as Idris Elba and Naomi Watts, and just the incredible amount of work that goes into every production.”

Farren took time out of his busy schedule to answer students’ questions on his career, which has included winning the Best Drama Series BAFTA for The Fades, and directing Hollywood feature film Shut In.

“After a two-hour talk, Farren welcomed questions from the rapt audience of students and then got up close and personal by sharing various scripts and mood boards,” Simon added. “It was a truly inspiring event and the students were blown away by the opportunity to listen and learn from such a huge talent.”

And it wasn’t just students who enjoyed the event, as Farren later Tweeted: “Had a ball sharing my experience with the UCATV students today. Loved their passion and enthusiasm.”

Television Production at UCA is taught at both the Maidstone Television Studios and UCA Rochester. Students have the opportunity to study the practical course in one of the UK’s leading television studios and to work on some of the high profile shows that are made there.
