During this 6-week Bronze Arts Award course, participants will take part in various creative workshops that are fine art focused. These will involve practical, hands-on experiences and theory development that will contribute to a portfolio that show understanding and exploration of different art forms. Participants will explore drawing, painting, collage, print making and paper sculpture methods. While exploring these, they will consider fundamental elements of art and design including line, colour, shape, texture and space.
The course is structured to enable participants to work towards their Bronze Arts Award qualification. It will be delivered online through a Blackboard Collaborate room. Each session will be live online with a creative tutor to guide participants through the practical sessions; providing demonstrations and resources that are inclusive and accessible, and participants will be guided through researching creative practitioners and careers in the creative industry to further develop their critical thinking skills.
Students will participate in collaborative activity by providing the tutor and the group with updates on their own progress and offering each other feedback to encourage conversation between peers. Feedback from the tutor will be given each week providing that each student send in their work-in-progress. Attendance each week and following guidance from the tutor will ensure participants meet the Arts Award criteria.

WEEK 1
Introduction to Arts Award, and individually picking themes for your projects. We will look into how to choose and research something you will be interested in. You will also be deciding how to document your work in ways of a sketchbook, online blog / vlog, podcasts, or PowerPoint presentation and we’ll be looking at how to develop your creative portfolio. This week will also involve workshops in drawing, painting, collage techniques to get you started to develop your practical skills.
WEEK 2
Exploring creative and art events. You’ll have the choice of viewing an online gallery tour, arts documentary, performances, films, or something else, we will be looking at how to look at an arts event you have / or will experience, and talk about the things to look for in an arts event. You will then discuss this and document your findings and thoughts.
WEEK 3
We will continue to make! This week we’ll explore techniques of printmaking. Starting with making our own block prints out of recycled materials in the morning and lino printing in the afternoon. We’ll find out about some of the artists and designers who use these methods in their work and what it can be used for so that you can gain a sense of context. You’ll also continue to work independently to build your understanding and experience of printmaking techniques.
WEEK 4
This week will focus on creative practitioners that inspires you! This can be an artist, a musician, performer, or even a youtuber. They don’t have to be well known, just someone who works in the creative industry. We will investigate how to research practitioners and what you can learn from them, appropriating work, and what it is like to work in the creative industry through interview and Q&As.
In this session we will also bring together our previous work and begin to construct sculptures in different ways.
WEEK 5
During this session we are going to plan how we share our own creative skills to others. We will be choosing an activity we want to show off and work through planning, doing, and reviewing this. This can be something as simple as a tutorial video or teaching a family member how to do something!
WEEK 6
The final week will be wrapping up everything that has been learnt in the previous sessions and finishing off any work we have yet to finish. We will be consolidating all the work we have made into a portfolio of your choice and reviewing our progress. In this session you will have a chance to ask any final questions, finish everything off, and complete your creative project whilst completing essential elements to meet the arts award criteria.
We will also be working together to create an online collaborative publication during the sessions which will be digitally collated, shared and commented on. Once you have completed all the sessions your work will then be reviewed, and upon meeting criteria you will gain a bronze arts award.
The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 13th October 2024.
Useful
information
UCA’s Arts Award programmes are suitable for students who are studying or have an interest in creative subjects and would like to develop their skills and portfolio.
The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for young people to access free art and design tuition from a higher education institution to support them in the development of their portfolio of work. It's also designed for students who may not otherwise have the chance to access such an opportunity.

- are the first generation in their family to study at higher education level (e.g. Degree, HND, HNC)

- are from a black or minority ethnic (BAME) background

This information will be gathered via UCA’s Arts Award application form and will be assessed by the University’s Outreach Manager and Outreach Officer.
Once the application deadline has passed, we will consider all applications against the priority criteria listed above to determine who will be offered a place. A decision will be sent in writing to confirm whether a place on the programme has been secured, and successful applicants will be asked to confirm their place in writing. Where the programmes are oversubscribed, unplaced applicants who meet the criteria outlined above will be kept on a waiting list and allocated spaces should they become available. UCA reserves the right to cancel or amend Arts Award activities at any time prior to the start of the course. In the event of any changes, applicants/participants and their parents/carers will be notified accordingly.
If an applicant decides not to accept their offer, they must inform UCA staff via email as soon as possible so spaces can be reallocated where possible, by emailing outreach@uca.ac.uk
