- Week 3: Sunday 10 November
- Week 4: Sunday 17 November
- Week 5: Sunday 24 November
- Week 6: Sunday 1 December
Each session will run from 10:00-16:00 with a lunch break and time for independent study.
Week 1
Fashion and Textile Inspiration. This week you will discover designers and textile artists that focus on messaging and wider ethical and sustainable concepts. These are really inspirational new designers and artists that will provide inspiration for your future projects in the programme. You will make research material on the subjects and make creative notes and research documents on the content from the day which will form part of your Arts Award criteria.
Week 2
Getting creative! This week you will start to build a creative wall art from textiles. The inspiration from the previous week plus the techniques explored will help you develop your ideas. Throughout this session we will focus on building your techniques with guidance from your tutor on your textile piece. Based off your previous weeks research you will create a wall hanging that includes words/fonts/ ideas inspired by an inspirational quote or words that mean something to you. Focus skills for this week are simple embroidery techniques & applique and building slogans and graphic elements into your designs.
Week 3
This week we will continue to work on our final make as well as some related textile techniques. By the end of the session you will have finished your piece and share feedback via online platforms. There will be workshops this week on creative embellishments, textile decoration and sequin making. We encourage sustainable practice and use of any unused or redundant materials from your own home (such as soft disposable plastics, cardboard, buttons, ring pulls) will make up a small element of this task alongside the pack of materials supplied. The final textile piece will be a mixture of techniques and will give you the chance to develop your own creative practice guided by the workshops.
Week 4
This week will focus on developing your skills in reviewing designers and taking inspiration. You will view online live recordings of fashion shows as well as designer talks and reflect on what you have learnt. Reflection and interaction are keys elements of Arts Award and through chat functions and online platforms we will share our thoughts!
Week 5
This is another creative week where we will learn the skills to create your own weave. This will then form part of the Arts Award criteria to share a skill with a friend or relative. We will plan our skill share and teach someone how to create their own creative weave.
Week 6
This is our final week where we will be bringing together your submission. There will be a chance to ask questions, work independently on any final areas of the award and catch up on anything left to do in order to create your full Arts Award submission.
The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 13th October 2024.
Useful
information
UCA’s Arts Award programmes are suitable for students who are studying or have an interest in creative subjects and would like to develop their skills and portfolio.
The aim of the course is to provide an opportunity for young people to access free art and design tuition from a higher education institution to support them in the development of their portfolio of work. It's also designed for students who may not otherwise have the chance to access such an opportunity.
Priority will be given to applicants who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- are the first generation in their family to study at higher education level (e.g. Degree, HND, HNC)
- are currently eligible for Free School Meals
- come from a neighbourhood with low overall progression rates to higher education (determined by postcode using POLAR 3 data)
- are from a black or minority ethnic (BAME) background
- are in, or have lived under local authority care
- have caring responsibilities for a family member
- have a disability
- attend a HEON, KaMCOP or KMPF partnered school (a list of eligible schools is included below)
- live in HEON or KaMCOP target postcode area
- have not previously attended a UCA outreach programme
- are studying without the support of family
- are an unaccompanied asylum seeker/refugee
- a child from a military family
- from a gypsy, roma and traversal community
Allocation will also be based on your personal statement, where we would like to see an evident passion for the subject and an interest in studying a creative subject at a higher level.
This information will be gathered via UCA’s Arts Award application form and will be assessed by the University’s Outreach Manager and Outreach Officer.
Once the application deadline has passed, we will consider all applications against the priority criteria listed above to determine who will be offered a place. A decision will be sent in writing to confirm whether a place on the programme has been secured, and successful applicants will be asked to confirm their place in writing. Where the programmes are oversubscribed, unplaced applicants who meet the criteria outlined above will be kept on a waiting list and allocated spaces should they become available. UCA reserves the right to cancel or amend Arts Award activities at any time prior to the start of the course. In the event of any changes, applicants/participants and their parents/carers will be notified accordingly.
If an applicant decides not to accept their offer, they must inform UCA staff via email as soon as possible so spaces can be reallocated where possible, by emailing outreach@uca.ac.uk
