Elphicks

This independent department store is an icon of Farnham. Established in 1881, it is a bit of a local institution and stepping inside is like taking a step back in time. Their café, with a view of the high street, sells some of the nicest cakes in town.

The Museum of Farnham

This friendly, independent museum is dedicated to the history of Farnham. You can learn about Farnham’s famous citizens or take a stroll out in the walled garden. The Museum of Farnham has free admission and is a great place to get to know the town.

Gostrey Meadow

There is no shortage of green space in Farnham, but Gostrey Meadow might just be the prettiest. Within easy walking distance of UCA, this vast park is sliced by the River Wey and home to a community of ducks (oh yes — ducklings in Spring!). There are plenty of benches, but the best spot is on the riverbank.

Farnham Park

It would be unfair to mention Gostrey Meadow but not Farnham Park. With green flag status, this medieval deer park can be found at the top of town. It has a café, toilets, and a nine-hole golf course.

Farnham Maltings

Farnham’s thriving arts centre, the Maltings includes a cinema, several theatre spaces, a café, and a small shop selling local crafts. Keep an eye out for any exciting events that coincide with your visit — the first Saturday of every month sees an antiques and craft market. There’s always something going on.

New Ashgate Gallery

This little gem of a gallery can be found in the Maltings car park. Dedicated to contemporary art and craft, the New Ashgate Gallery exhibits work from both new and established artists working over a diverse range of forms.

Crafts Study Centre

Part of the university itself, this specialist museum is free to explore. They exhibit modern and contemporary crafts, ranging from furniture to textiles to calligraphy, and often hold interesting exhibitions in their dedicated exhibition space.

Farnham Castle Keep

On the shoulder of Farnham, overlooking the town is Farnham Castle. Originally founded in 1138, this town landmark is an absolute must-see for its sweeping views of the surrounding area. The Castle has housed bishops and soldiers alike, seeing action in the English Civil War. The well-preserved ruins are owned and operated by English Heritage and are free to explore.

Waverley Abbey

Staying with the historic, Waverley Abbey predates even the town castle. Two miles from Farnham town centre, it is well worth the visit to see these haunting ruins in their stunning riverside setting.

Watts Gallery

A little bit further afield, towards Guildford, is the Watts Gallery — Artists’ Village. This unique complex of purpose-built galleries and workshops was home to George Frederick Watts. You can see his paintings and sculptures, as well as the De Morgen Collection, Pottery Building, changing exhibitions, the eclectic Watts Chapel, and explore the nearby woodland.
