There are bound to be challenges along the way, with draft personal statements, feedback, more redrafts, exam results and more…and all of this at the same time as trying to have some kind of personal life.

It may seem impossible, but if you plan ahead and give yourself time to meet the necessary deadlines, you won’t have to scramble around in a panic.

Just start, keep going, and eventually, you will get to where you want to be.

3. Ask questions

If you don’t understand something, don’t be afraid to ask questions. So many people have struggled through the same questions as you and universities are full of friendly and approachable people, from admissions tutors to course lecturers, who will be only too happy to help. As Chinese philosopher, Confucius said, ‘the man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.’

4. Discuss with your parents, friends and teachers

The best — and only — person who can make decisions about your future is… you. However, it can be helpful to discuss your options with people who you know and trust such as parents, friends and teachers. They can offer advice and encouragement about applications, deadlines, and interviews. At the end of the day, remember that their advice is just that — advice. It’s your life, and your decision!

5. Have fun!

University is an exciting time — the doors to your future are wide open and you hold the keys! So, embrace this moment and enjoy the process of learning, meeting new people, growing and pushing yourself. You never know where it could take you.
