Research statement

Ellen’s research focuses on aspects of the representation and performativity in commercial and domestic family photography. Her work considers the use of photography as a means of exploring the act of representation as a meditation on photography and image performance.

Currently Ellen is working with the 1930s archive that belonged to her Great Aunt, Nita Harvey. Nita was a famous actress who won a beauty contest in 1933 and was signed to Paramount Pictures in Hollywood. Ellen is creating a dialogue between the performativity of the domestic portraits of Nita taken by her mother and family, and the professional industry images taken by Paramount Studio photographers, and including as text edited sections of Nita’s words, documented in magazine diaries, notebooks, scrapbooks, letters, telegrams and newspaper articles of the time.
