Our Pre-sessional English language course is specifically designed to prepare you to study art and design at UCA. We offer a range of courses to improve your IELTS score by up to 1.0 to enable you to meet the language requirement for your main course of study.

Pre-sessional English courses are available if you are progressing onto an undergraduate or postgraduate course, or the Graduate Diploma: Art & Design course. We also offer the International Foundation in Art, Design & Media with five or ten weeks of intensive English training.

Whether you are a first language speaker of English or not, or are simply new to a university environment, our team of Learning Development Tutors can help you to communicate effectively and creatively in your chosen field.

This course will help you to: improve your IELTS score; improve your academic English for art and design; expand your art and design specific vocabulary in preparation for future study; enhance your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in English; develop your research skills; increase your confidence as a creative arts student in the UK; understand more about living and studying in the UK.

 The course fee includes:

  • Tuition fee for the Pre-sessional English course
  • Educational visits
  • Meet and greet service, including transport from Heathrow or Gatwick airport (student only)
  • Transport from the Pre-sessional course to the campus of your main course of study.

Entry requirements

To be able to study one of our Pre-sessional English courses, you must:

  • Have an offer for a UCA course
  • Meet the minimum English language requirement for the Pre-Sessional English course (based on the main course you intend to progress onto).


Minimum English language requirements

The level of English language you need depends on the course you are progressing onto. You can find more information about this on our English language requirements page.

For example, studying a Graduate Diploma: Art & Design course, you need to have an minimum overall IELTS* score of 5.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component. By taking a five-week Pre-sessional English course (which improves your score by 0.5), the minimum IELTS* score you need is 5.0 overall with 5.0 in each component.

If you already meet the English language requirement

Studying for IELTS is a different experience to taking part in a creative arts class in English. Even if you already meet the English language requirement for your main course, you may still benefit from the specialist content on the Pre-sessional English course.

How to apply

You must apply for your chosen course before you apply for a Pre-sessional English course.

If you already have an offer for one of our courses, please apply by emailing our international admissions team with the following information.

  • Your name
  • Your student number or date of birth
  • If you want to attend the five-week pre-sessional course (IELTS increase of 0.5) or the ten-week course (IELTS increase of 1.0)
  • Scanned copy of your IELTS certificate, if available. 


We recommend that you book your place on a Pre-sessional English course as soon as possible as places are limited.

Additional information

While you study the Pre-sessional English course at our Farnham campus, you can choose to stay in our on-campus student village. To help you settle in, we will also give you a welcome pack, which includes the essential bedding and kitchen items you will need.
