We are pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Stopher as Executive Dean to the Faculty of Art, Media and Communication Design.
A design academic with extensive experience as a practitioner and creative consultant in communication and digital design, Ben joins UCA from the London College of Communication, UAL, where he has led the newly created Interactive and Visual Communication Programme, encompassing interaction design, visual communication, games design and animation.
Ben, who will take up post later in the Spring term, said: “I’m very much looking forward to the challenge of leading the Faculty of Art, Media and Communication Design at an exciting time for UCA. The subjects explored by the faculty are powerful in shaping how people understand and produce the 21st century and offer the opportunity for students and staff to develop their unique creative endeavour and understand its value.
“As we grow, I aim to help the faculty to make a profound contribution to the personal futures of our students and staff and through them the future of our creative disciplines.”
Ben has taught at various UK universities and led courses at FE, undergraduate and postgraduate level. He currently holds the position of external examiner for Art and Design at Sheffield Hallam University and was previously external examiner at the University of Portsmouth. From 2005-2012, Ben was designer and studio partner at Inventive & Co, and is also creative director for the annual publication Tangible Evidence.
His research interests include how global digital culture shapes design practice and his PhD at the Royal College of Art explores models of distributed and augmented ideation through speculative prototypes and user research.
