Financial support for postgraduate courses

Cost is an important factor to consider if you’re thinking of continuing your studies. There are a number of sources of funding which can help you with the costs of studying for your postgraduate taught or research degree.

Some of this information only applies to UK and EU students. If you’re an international student, you may want to see our international fees and finance pages.

Financial Assistance Fund

The University has a Financial Assistance Fund which can support you if you’re experiencing financial difficulties beyond your control and you can demonstrate a clear financial need. The fund is open to all full and part-time home (UK) students on undergraduate and postgraduate courses. You'll be expected to have applied for all student funding available to you, for example the student maintenance loan and tuition fee loan or the postgraduate loan. You’re also expected to have taken advantage of any alternative sources of funding available to you including an interest free overdraft. For further information please contact your campus Specialist Adviser

PhD Fee Bursary

We are offering a number of fee bursary awards to suitably qualified applicants to undertake research through applied arts and crafts; design; still and moving image including animation; and critical fine art practices and architecture; from both a subject specific perspective or with a cross-disciplinary orientation by either creative practice and thesis, or thesis only.

Other sources of funding

Postgraduate Loans from the Student Loans Company

Students from the UK starting a postgraduate Master’s course in 2017 will be able to apply for a Postgraduate Loan through Student Finance England.

Professional and career-development loan

This is a commercial bank loan that you can use to help pay for work-related learning. We are a professional and career-development loans registered learning provider – registration number 01-1927.

If you have secured a loan and part of it is to be paid directly to us towards your tuition fees, please email a copy of the agreement to so that we can note this information on your account and ensure we can set up a payment plan that matches the loan payments.  

The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)

The AHRC offers funding opportunities for various disciplines and projects.


Postgrad Solutions study bursary

Postgrad Solutions offer bursaries of £500 for postgraduate courses. offers a total of £12,000 in scholarships every year to UK or EU students starting a postgraduate course.

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online

The Alternative Guide to Postgraduate Funding Online is all about alternative sources of funding - especially charities - which can make awards (fees, maintenance, research costs) to any student regardless of subject, or nationality.

The Alternative Guide Online contains a huge database of funding opportunities, comprehensive guidance, and numerous tools to help you prepare a winning grant application. UCA has purchased a licence to the Guide, and so it’s free for all UCA students and staff to use!
