Password Problems

Password problems

  • I cannot log into my ucreative email or UCA computer

There could be several reasons for this:

    • you made a mistake when typing in your password - passwords are case sensitive!
      Try again.
    • there is an issue with your ucreative user account, e.g. your enrolment is not completed as you have recently changed courses. See a Library IT Advisor.
    • you set the browser to remember your password, but changed your password in the meantime. Type in your password manually.
    • your password has expired - reset your password online

If you encounter difficulties, please see a Library IT Advisor at your campus library.

  • I have forgotten my password

If you have forgotten your password you can change it online, on or off campus. Please note the system only allows you to change your password once in 24 hours.

    You will be asked for

    • your student number (see Student ID Card)
    • your surname
    • date of birth
    • secret question - please note the system is case sensitive and will remember exactly how you set up this security answer - so if your answer contains uppercase characters, please remember to include them in your answer.

  • How do I change my password on both Macs and PCs?
    • Log into Outlook Webmail: https://ex.ucreative.ac.uk
    • Click on the Options tab which is normally on the top right hand side of your email, and then scroll down until you get to the change your password option.
    • Enter your old password, and then your new one. Once your password has been changed, you will need to use this the next time that you login.
    • There are also alternative methods for both platforms, Mac – System Preferences, accounts. PC – Alt-Ctrl-Del, change password.

The system remembers up to 24 previous passwords, so please make sure that you put in something completely different. It also has to be a minimum of seven characters and it is better if it contains a mixture of numbers and letters to make it more secure.

    Please remember

    • next time you log in you will need to use your new password.
    • your browser may remember your old password, therefore make sure you type in your new one.

  • Keeping my password memorable and safe

Never give your password to anybody

Hackers have gained access to accounts on many university computers throughout the world. A person with unauthorised access to your account can send email in your name, browse the Web, corrupt your files, delete or modify important information, or eat up your resources. In addition, hackers often run programs that put a heavy burden on the university's computing network, degrading service for all users.

    Protect your UCA password

It is against UCA's IT Use Policy to share your username and password with someone else. Therefore please remember the following:

    • Do not give your username and password to anyone under any circumstances, even if they are a close friend or member of your family. Please also note that IT Services will NEVER ask you for these details
    • Do not let others use your account, even if you log them in.
    • If you enter your username and password into a UCA website, be sure you exit all open web browsers when you are finished.
    • Do not walk away from a computer (for instance in a studio or library) until you are certain that you have logged off.

    Beware of common traps

    • Any emails from official looking bodies (e.g. banks) asking you to disclose your password.
    • Any emails from an IT helpdesk asking you to disclose your password.
    • Do not write your username and password in a place where others could find them.
    • Be sure no one is watching when you enter your username and password.
    • If you are asked for your details (by email, in person, etc) you should refuse to give them and contact the Library IT Advisor.

Do not share your ucreative password inadvertently
If you think you have inadvertently given your details out, please change your password NOW or contact a Library IT Advisor so that they can change it for you (see right of page for details).

Tips for choosing a secure password

    • make it easy to remember - but not easily guessed by someone else!
    • make it at least 7 characters - the longer your password, the safer it is.
    • include a number and/or capital letter

An example of a good password is Roverloves2run as it includes an uppercase and numeric character as well as being long.

    Changing your password

If your password has expired or you have forgotten your password, you can change it online, on or off campus with the mypassword tool. You will be asked for: your name, student number, date of birth and secret question.

Any difficulties, please see the Library IT Advisor (a valid UCA student ID card MUST be presented if you require a new password).

Remember to be vigilant - see UCA's IT Use Policy (pdf) for more information.
