Year 1 BA (Hons) Fashion
School of Fashion
The 1st Year students undertake the Shirt Project in their 2nd term. It is a challenging project for all the right reasons. It is the first project that students are asked to design specifically for a brand – in this case, a designer label sold at Dover Street Market. The founder, Rei Kawakubo, comments on her concept store:
“I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an on going atmosphere of beautiful chaos: the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision.”
Students chose to design a shirt for one of the following labels: Azzedine Alaia, Aganovich, Ann Demeulemeester, Casely-Hayford, Celine, Chalayan, Dior, Facetasm, Valentino, Giambattista Valli, J.W. Anderson, Erdem, Jacuemus, Simone Rocha, Molly Goddard, Phoebe English, Sacai, Thom Browne, Walter Van Beirendonck to name a few.
Another challenge was the making of the shirt – this project is the FIRST make project. As a project it develops a real understanding of the design process from concept to realisation.
